Breathing is one of those things that we do without much thought, which is pretty useful really as this keeps us alive. When we start to bring our breath under our conscious control however, magical things can happen.
When we feel anxious, stressed or upset, we tend to breathe faster and shallower which contributes to us feeling more anxious, stressed and upset. If we are more deliberate about our breath and choose to breathe slower and deeper, it can help to calm our mind and the stress response within our body.
Feeling sceptical? Try it the next time you start feeling nervous or out of control. Breathe in and count to four, and breathe out and count to four. Do this 10 times. And if you are still feeling distressed, do it 10 more times! For maximum brain space, repeat a mantra over and over again to quiet the noise in your mind. "I am calm, I am calm, I am confident, I am confident"... whatever works for you.
I do this every time I am nervous about performing, whether it is a job interview, giving a presentation and even when I took my driving test. It really works. So use this mug, and your coffee break as a reminder to help you to calm down and just breathe.
